Una doble vida para perseguir un sueño: la historia de Lella Lombardi como piloto de la Fórmula 1

El automovilismo se ha caracterizado por ser un deporte controlado, en su mayoría, por figuras masculinas y, como en otras disciplinas, en él participan mujeres que han demostrado su talento para trascender. A pesar de que no tienen las mismas oportunidades, en el automovilismo han existido grandes protagonistas. Una de ellas es la italiana Lella Lombardi, quien puso en alto la participación de las mujeres y dedicó sus esfuerzos a la búsqueda de igualdad dentro y fuera de la pista de carreras.

La Fórmula 1 empezó en la década de los cincuenta, una época bastante exitosa para el movimiento feminista tras otorgar el derecho al voto. Pese a lo anterior, aún existían varios países en los que prevalecían las ideologías patriarcales, que hicieron aún más difícil incluir a las mujeres en la Fórmula 1. Lombardi fue la excepción, pues participó en 17 Grandes Premios y ha sido la única mujer en sumar puntos después de conseguir el sexto lugar en el Gran Premio de España en 1975 y debutar en el Gran Premio de Gran Bretaña en 1974.

Lella nació el 26 de marzo de 1941 en Frugarolo, Italia, en el auge de la dictadura fascista de Mussolini y la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Pasó su infancia y adolescencia en Italia, donde nació su pasión por los autos. Sus padres tenían una carnicería y ella era la encargada de repartir los pedidos en un camión, pero no fue hasta que, en un juego de handball, una chica le dio un pelotazo en la cara y manejó tan rápido para llevarla al hospital que se enamoró de la adrenalina de la velocidad. En ese momento, Lella supo lo que quería hacer con su vida.

En Italia comenzaron sus aventuras y el secreto de su doble vida: su sexualidad y su pasión por las carreras de autos. En 1967, empezó a competir en rallies a escondidas de sus padres y obtuvo la experiencia necesaria para lograr un excelente resultado en la Fórmula Monza, ser subcampeona de la Fórmula 3 en Italia en varias ocasiones y ganadora de la Fórmula 850 tres años después. Su éxito causó una gran sensación en los periódicos, donde la apodaban la “Tigresa de Turín”, y tras aparecer en los diarios varias veces, sus padres se enteraron de su secreto.

El éxito siguió creciendo y en 1973 terminó en 12º lugar en el Gran Premio de Mónaco de F3, donde conoció a John y Angela Webb, pareja que impulsó su carrera en el automovilismo y promotores de la F1 en el Reino Unido. Los Webb ayudaron a Lella para que entrara como piloto titular en el equipo March para la temporada en 1975 e hiciera historia al convertirse en la segunda mujer en correr una carrera de la Fórmula 1; y la más conocida hasta ahora.

Siguió cosechando victorias durante nueve carreras de la misma temporada. En el Gran Premio de España, después de 25 vueltas y 8 de los 25 autos que marcaron salida, Lella se encontraba en sexto lugar, el último que le daba derecho a puntos. Lombardi ganó 0.5 puntos y el título de la única mujer que obtuvo puntos puntos en la F1. En años posteriores, fue invitada a correr una competencia en la serie NASCAR, donde terminó en 31º lugar después de 400 vueltas alrededor de Daytona.

En los ochenta, después de varios años de competir a nivel profesional, se retiró y se dedicó a correr en autos de turismo, hasta que le detectaron cáncer en 1985. A pesar de esto, su pasión por el automovilismo continuó y por eso creó su propio equipo llamado Lella Lombardi Autosport, que aún existe. La enfermedad de Lella se complicó y en 1992, a los cincuenta años de edad, falleció en su país natal.

En los 73 años de historia de la Fórmula 1 y en sus más de mil carreras, solo dos mujeres han corrido en un Gran Premio de la Fórmula 1, una de ellas es Lombardi. No obstante, este no fue su único legado, ya que Lella es parte de los tres pilotos de la Fórmula 1 que se han declarado abiertamente parte de la comunidad LGBTIQA+.

Gracias a las influencias de Lombardi, la FIA (Federación Internacional del Automóvil) ha autorizado las W series, un campeonato con el objetivo de fomentar la inclusión de las mujeres en el automovilismo. La vida de Lella tuvo su fin antes de lo esperado, pero su historia, legado e inspiración aún prevalecen.
