Todo comenzó la mañana del 17 de junio de 1994. El Estadio Rose Bowl de Pasadena, en la ciudad de Los Ángeles, estaba repleto de aficionados que esperaban ansiosos el inicio del partido inaugural de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA en Estados Unidos, donde se enfrentarían Bolivia contra Alemania. El juego estaba por comenzar. El árbitro dio el silbatazo de inicio y el sueño de muchos estaba a punto de hacerse realidad… mientras que para otros se volvería su vida.  Eso fue lo que le sucedió a Kari Seitz que, sentada justo frente a la línea de medio, vio entrar al árbitro a la cancha y se dio cuenta que “esto es lo que [quería] hacer, [quería] ser árbitra de un Mundial” sin pensar que, en ese entonces, todos eran hombres. Este fue un momento clave para su carrera y para el futuro del arbitraje femenil.

Kari Seitz nació y creció en Michigan, Estados Unidos, y demostró su pasión por el futbol desde muy joven, pues desde los seis años comenzó a practicarlo. Durante su niñez y adolescencia, no era común que las niñas practicaran futbol, por lo que a sus 14 años creó el primer equipo femenil de su ciudad. Su coach, quien no tenía mucha experiencia, quería que todas las jugadoras conocieran bien las reglas del juego, así que todas tomaron un curso de arbitraje. Después de seis meses desde que inició el equipo, Kari era la única que arbitraba partidos.

Su primera experiencia como árbitra fue en un partido de categoría sub-12 masculina, en el que tanto el público como los jugadores y los entrenadores tuvieron una pésima actitud hacia ella. Cuando el marcador se encontraba 11-0, uno de los futbolistas hizo una entrada hacia un jugador del equipo contrario: lo tiró y le rompió la camiseta. Kari, con conocimientos de arbitraje aún básicos, no dudó y sacó la tarjeta roja. Los espectadores, en su mayoría adultos, gritaron y la abuchearon, por lo que tuvo que dejar el campo escoltada por el servicio de seguridad.

Al llegar a casa, se sintió derrotada y pensó que había cometido un gran error.  Incluso pensó en abandonar el futbol por completo y jamás volver a poner un pie en la cancha. Para su sorpresa, el director del torneo la llamó ese mismo día, después de que quedara impresionado por su valentía, para que volviera al siguiente día para arbitrar la final. En ese momento, Kari dio paso al inicio de su gran carrera como árbitra que, en sus propias palabras: “(…) jamás hubiera creído que en un millón de años me llevaría a representar a mi país en cuatro copas mundiales, tres juegos olímpicos y trabajar en la FIFA capacitando árbitros por todo el mundo”. Durante su carrera tuvo muchos éxitos y su trabajo fue reconocido en todo el mundo por su participación en cuatro Copas Mundiales Femeninas de la FIFA (1999, 2003, 2007 y 2011) y cuatro Juegos Olímpicos (2004, 2008, 2012 y 2016).

Finalmente, en octubre del 2013, anunció su retiro como árbitra. A pesar de sus éxitos y logros, Kari menciona que “[dejó] el arbitraje decepcionada” pues aún hay mucho que hacer en la búsqueda de la igualdad. Desde el inicio de su carrera, tuvo la aspiración de marcar una diferencia como árbitro y poder lograr un cambio para el futbol femenil. Sin embargo, durante casi toda su carrera se dedicó a arbitrar partidos varoniles de primera división; y cuando llegó la liga femenil, se decidió que las árbitras debían centrarse en ésta, donde al no haber muchos partidos ni de primera división, las árbitras no participaron en las ligas de dicha división por veinte años.

Ahora, treinta y seis años después, Kari Seitz es conocida como la árbitra de futbol con más experiencia del mundo. En 2016, comenzó a trabajar como la directora del Departamento de Arbitraje Femenino de la FIFA, donde empezó a forjar nuevas leyendas en el mundo del futbol y el arbitraje, entre las que se destaca Natalie Simon, la primera mujer afroamericana en arbitrar para la FIFA. Como directora, Seitz ha buscado impulsar cambios para la igualdad de género y dar más y mejores oportunidades para las mujeres de todo el mundo que buscan seguir sus pasos. Tal y como ella suele decir: “apreciar a las personas en cada paso de la vida es un regalo que obtuve al estar involucrada en el futbol”.
